I am a middle-class, white, American woman. I come to Dadié’s writing as an outsider. I see connections between his writing and American writings of racial struggle even while I know the West African experience of blackness, whiteness, and otherness is different from my American experience in ways I can both see and in ways I have not yet imagined. As you participate in this website’s work, please call to task all applications of colonialism. Challenge all false hierarchies and point to the value in indigenous knowledge that may be obscured by Western intellectual training. Let’s all work to read, analyze, and write with inclusion and to learn from our mistakes.
